Chen-mu Shih first became known for his works involving the "auspicious toad." Later, inspired by his daughter, he created a series of works made out of paper boxes. His more recent series on the "magic fish" reflects his concern for the environment. In 2009, Shih joined a competition in China for the first time, coming home with third place for the work "Conversation." The piece, involving his well-renowned toads, represents art exchanges between Taiwan and China and is a testament to Shih's skill as a wood carver.
