Cheng learned the skill of ceramic-making in his senior year of university. Though started later than the others, he cultivates himself the habit of observation and deliberation before starting each work.
Through the process of creation for almost 30 years, Cheng was fascinated by molding clay during a certain period of time. "The most economical way to present physical aesthetics", said Cheng. In his solo exhibition "Composition of Banana Leaf" in 2001, he experimented the imagination of mixing banana leaves with bamboo pipes. His study in archaeology and experiences of investigation into relics also inspired him to create "the Sealed Memories" series.
