Cheng-hsing Chien's workshop is next to the Shimen Reservoir. The beautiful landscape there is a source of constant inspiration. The lotus is his favorite subject. To make his works unique, Chien uses a "hollowing out" technique, a skill that lies somewhere between sculpting and embossing. Applying this technique, he turns lifeless pieces of wood into vivid lotuses. In 2008, Chien happened to come upon a piece of camphor with a diameter of greater than 500 cm, out of which he carved the largest lotus sculpture in Taiwan. Naming it "A Pleasant Atmosphere," is stood for his wish for a calm aftermath to the 2008 presidential election. The piece sold for a high price as soon as it was finished. Chien now wants to start using different challenging media, such as jade and stone, to give his pieces a new, fresh look.
