Chang was born in Miaoli, a senior artist of bamboo and rattan weaving, and the 3rd generation of Dajia rush weaving family. In 1973, a Japanese colleague of his father asked a favor, which is to find bamboo lamp craftsman in Taiwan. While failed to find the qualified one at that time, Chang started this career hereafter. Started with basic facilities and weaving skills, Chang spent 2 years to explore the weaving art. At first he tried to simulate Japanese floral utensils, and soon he began to create his own works with thin bamboo.
Chang is mostly inspired by Taiwan folklore bamboo weaves. He adopts the spiral and concave-convex knitting feature in aboriginal cultures, and studies thoroughly the flexibility and lightness of thin bamboo weaving from Japan, widely integrating different features and cultures. Chang was awarded the 6th Folklore Arts Inheritance Prize by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan.
